National Spotlight Showcases Sutter Health Program

Sutter Health’s Advanced Illness Management (AIM) program is gaining national attention for its innovative approach to partnering with patients and families to best coordinate end-of-life care options.

As part of the evolving discussion on health care reform, the Center for Health Transformation (CHT) – led by Newt Gingrich – is featuring a paper on its Web site about AIM and a similar program at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in Wisconsin.

“AIM is specially designed to empower a patient to take control of his or her health care near the end of life,” said Brad Stuart, M.D. senior medical director of Sutter VNA & Hospice. “AIM provides a customized mix of medical treatment and supportive care according to a patient’s goals and preferences during late-stage illness.”

AIM is available in all branches of Sutter VNA & Hospice. A pilot project to expand services to more patients starts in November 2009 in Sutter Health’s Sacramento Sierra region; a second pilot is expected to begin in the Bay Area in 2010.
